Somatic Therapy in Calgary

CalgaryCounselling&PsychologyCentre-54_e

Somatic Therapy is a transformative, evidence‑informed approach to counselling that works with the mind‑body connection to support healing from emotional distress, trauma, and chronic stress. Rather than focusing only on thoughts or insight, somatic therapy gently includes the body as a central part of the therapeutic process.

The word somatic means “body‑based” or “body‑oriented.” Somatic therapy recognizes that our life experiences – especially stressful or overwhelming ones – are not only remembered cognitively, but are also held in the body through sensation, posture, muscle tension, breath, and patterns of nervous system response.

By working with the body in the present moment, somatic therapy supports deep, lasting change at the nervous system level.

Body‑Based Therapy for Nervous System Regulation, Trauma & Emotional Healing

What is Somatic Therapy?

Somatic therapy is based on the understanding that healing happens through embodied awareness, not just verbal processing.

Sessions may include gentle, guided practices such as:

  • Mindfulness and present‑moment awareness

  • Tracking body sensations and internal cues

  • Breathwork and nervous system settling practices

  • Awareness of posture, movement, and physical impulses

  • Supporting the safe completion of stress responses

  • Integrating emotional and physical experience

All somatic interventions are introduced slowly, collaboratively, and with consent. Nothing is forced, and sessions are always paced to match your nervous system’s capacity.

The Goal of Somatic Therapy: Nervous System Regulation & Integration

The primary goals of somatic therapy are nervous system regulation and integration – a sense of wholeness within yourself.

A regulated nervous system does not mean feeling calm all the time. Rather, it means having a resilient and responsive nervous system that can move flexibly between states of activation and rest.

Understanding Nervous System Dysregulation

When someone experiences overwhelming emotional or physical events, the nervous system may protect itself by disconnecting from bodily awareness. While this response can be lifesaving in the moment, it can later lead to experiences such as:

  • Feeling disconnected from your body or emotions

  • A sense of fragmentation or emotional numbness

  • Difficulty feeling safe, grounded, or present

  • Feeling stuck in patterns you intellectually understand but can’t shift

Reconnecting with the Body After Stress or Trauma

Somatic therapy works gently with these protective responses, supporting the reintegration of disconnected or fragmented parts back into a cohesive sense of self – at a pace that feels safe and manageable.

How Somatic Therapy Can Help

Somatic therapy can be beneficial for individuals experiencing:

Concerns Somatic Therapy Commonly Supports

  • Trauma or complex trauma (PTSD, C‑PTSD)

  • Chronic stress, anxiety, or emotional overwhelm

  • Depression or emotional numbness

A Collaborative, Consent‑Based Process

Somatic therapy is always collaborative and tailored to your individual needs. You remain fully in control of the pace and direction of therapy.

The goal is never to retraumatize or push through experiences, but to build capacity, safety, and trust within your own system.
